Stanley Bogdan died at his home in Nashua,NH sunday. Not all craftspersons building products in southern New Hampshire for flyfishers fish. Many do,or have, but some not.Sam Carlson, master of the quadrate fly rod, mold maker and vocalist, did not,and Henri Vaillencourt, who constructs the most elegant canoes of birch bark in the fashion of the Inuit even for all his time on waters dose not.Stan Bogdan fished.I remember meeting with him once when he had a heavily bandaged hand and, recognizing that it surely slowed his production( a one man operation in a converted mill in Nashua at the time),asked what pappened."fishing for shark",was the answer. It seems that he and his wife were in the Florida Kyes, and Stanley coudn't resist chasing shark with a fly.Line on the deck of his boat caught his hand as it disappeared overboard following a hooked shark.
FlyFisher everywhere benefited from Stan's near century of service to our sport. He was enormously supportive and helpful to me while I was coordinating th Atrantic Salmon Task Force.I'd like to think that if there are salmonids swiming the ring of Saturn, one of Stan's reels will be on the rod of that first angler. He not only created a product of legend, but has served admirably welcoming movers and sharkers from around the world to the fraternity of the flyfishers.Described in literature as a gentlmanly sport, fly fishing has expanded to include everyone, men and women alike. If you ever you met Stan,at a booth or on river,or at a meeting of fly anglers, you knew that Stan Bogdan was the very model of the gentleman those authors writing about.
The attached photos ar from Stanley's 90th birthday celebration, planned and executed by his friends and family in November,2008.we heard of Stan's first trip to the Whale where he was not only high rod for the week in river where the Whale regulars with decades of experience on that river, but landed the biggest fish for the week in river where the two motors are on each canoe, not in case of failure, but need.
Stan's Casacapedia family traveled to Nashua to share the story of monster salmon landed by Stan on a size 10fly in a river that considers 1/0 flies only adequate.Stan fished.
Silent reels,Alan
